Toddlers are my kind of people. They’re easily distracted, easily amused, and love playing outside. Plus, they don’t talk all that much. We get along perfectly. So when sisters Beth and Dana contacted me and asked me to hang out with their toddlers Carter and Nora, who are only 5 months apart, I was excited and immediately thought up some things we could do together on a hot summer morning. What’s better than a morning filled with back yard bubbles, watermelon, and pool parties for a kids photography session? Nothing, that’s what.
We started out slow, because although Carter and I had hung out before, Nora was cautious and shy of both me and my camera. We let Carter take the lead, being the good older cousin he is, and as he played like he normally would, Nora started to relax and have more fun.
And then when the bubble magic was gone, we moved to the deck and pulled out the watermelon I had brought. We timed the watermelon so that we could change the kids into their swim gear right after, for more play time.
By the way, the above and below photos were all shot really quickly after Nora lost her balance on the bench she was standing on and all three adults lunged at her as she regained it. The adults’ reactions surprised the kids and the genuine shock turned into hysterical laughter at their parents. I love toddlers.
After the watermelon was all gone, we got ready and went back into the backyard to play in the kiddie pool. Nora’s dad got quickly recruited by both kids to play with them, and they loved being thrown into the air and then placed into the pool. It was like their own little water ride.
The last thing we did before the end of our session was play with a big clear umbrella I had brought, and the backyard hose. They really liked being able to see the water coming at them and yet not get wet from it.
