Let me take you back to a time that feels like one hundred years ago. It was the last week of October, pre-Election pre-Daylight Saving, pre-Halloween. Remember that time? The VA Forestry Service had proclaimed this week to be the peak time for viewing autumn color, and I scheduled maternity and family photos with Melissa, Dave, and Joshua. Hurricane Zeta was looming, and it had been overcast and gloomy all week.
I helped Melissa pick a couple of outfits with colors that would pop against the leaves. I realized as we started shooting but didn’t have the heart to tell a certain UVA alumna that we had inadvertently chosen VT colors for their session.
Team rivalries aside, Melissa’s family looked amazing, not because they were suddenly channeling the Hokies, but because they were comfortable in what they were wearing. Comfortable and cute. Which is another way to describe this family. They’re comfortable in who they are, and definitely cute together.
We walked down That Hill in the park and made a lap around the lake. The day had been so gloomy. But there’s something to be said about overcast, moody maternity and family photos under colorful autumn leaves, against a still lake. It feels like the world is taking that long, deep breath with you, holding it for a minute with you as you prepare to shift into a new phase. Life is about to be very different, but there will be beauty in it.
There will be beauty, and also love and laughter, because those are bedrocks this family is built on.
I’m so lucky to have known these people for as long as I have, as dear friends and clients. Melissa, Dave, and Joshua, I’m so excited for you and your growing family. I can’t wait to meet your little dude and welcome him into the fold. Thank you for trusting me again with your big family milestones. It was so wonderful to take your maternity and family photos!
